About Squire Archery
Welcome to Squire Archery!
Squire Archery offers activities such as traditional archery range target shooting, long-distance archery, and TAG archery with foam-padded arrows. We have a private gated field dedicated to archery sessions, birthday parties, corporate events, and summer camps. We are based in Thriplow (famous for the Thriplow Daffodil Weekend) and are conveniently located near Royston, Sawston, and Whittlesford. Our venue is an ideal option for those seeking a local archery range near Cambridge or in Cambridgeshire.
Our fully qualified Archery GB instructor (with an Enhanced DBS check) provides guidance, coaching, and assistance to archers. We have adopted the latest advances in archery and exclusively use modern compound bows. We also supply all archery equipment and safety gear.
Our archery range, with its large marquee, is a wonderful venue for birthday celebrations, group parties, DofE courses, and small events. We offer traditional range target shooting, long-distance archery, and TAG archery with foam-padded arrows. Open seven days a week, we also offer floodlit evening archery sessions on our range. Our chief purpose is for everyone to have a great time. We think we are achieving that – just check out our wonderful Google Reviews!
We are thrilled to announce that Outlearn – an extensive outdoor activities online guide – has recently listed Squire Archery as a ‘Recommended’ outdoor activities provider. It is an honor to be recognised for our fun and educational experiences. Join us on our archery range, and discover the joy of engaging in an outdoor pursuit that combines both learning and adventure.
Away from home, we can provide archery activities for country fetes, corporate functions, and weddings. So, if you are an event organiser and would like to consider an archery outing for your next event, please get in touch.
Different types of archery we offer
Traditional range archery
Whether you are on your own or with a group of up to 24 people, this is a great activity that will really test your skill. While shooting at the classical archery target face mounted on straw butts, you will be able to watch your arrows flying through the air at high speed and thudding home into the targets. A giant scoreboard is provided so that everyone can record their scores in real time. There is also the option to shoot at night on our floodlit archery lanes.
It’s great fun and also a great leveller. It’s quite surprising to discover that the most unexpected people are naturally brilliant at this sport.
TAG archery
This is a perfect activity for six or more people. You get to shoot your friends with foam-padded arrows while taking cover behind giant hay bales and technicoloured smoke grenades. TAG archery is brilliant for birthdays, corporate events, and stag and hen parties. It can be run as a team event, where teams are required to achieve a mission without getting shot. This is great for testing strategy, leadership, and guile!
There is also the option of running the gauntlet, from one side of the field to the other, while your friends do their best to shoot you. One thing’s for sure, it’s great fun and everyone leaves the event with massive grins on their faces.
Long-distance archery
When using our high-powered bows and specialist modified arrows that are cork-tipped, you can aim at targets over 100 metres away on our range. It’s an absolute thrill to watch the arrows arcing through the sky and it’s even more exciting when you manage to hit your targets. It’s proper Battle of Hastings stuff – except that it’s completely safe and you’re using our compound bows rather than the old traditional longbows. And the targets don’t fire back!

Archery camps
We run archery camps during summer holidays and half terms throughout the year (10am to 4pm). Although traditional range archery is the main theme of the camps, there are several other activities we offer during the week. These include mini tractor driving, air rifle shooting, badminton, tag archery, giant bubble making activities, an end of week BBQ, metal detecting, making giant pots of pop corn over an open fire and plenty of other activities.

Birthday parties
A supervised birthday party with Squire Archery involves multi-coloured compound bows, exciting challenges, exploding balloons, psychedelic smoke grenades, or lots of bubbles and glitter. Whichever option you choose (see below), you are guaranteed that it will be a day to remember!
We have a large party marquee in our field at your disposal, so you can bring along the birthday cake, drinks, and party food for all to enjoy that special birthday party experience. Better yet, why not complement your party activities with a BBQ? See what cooked food we can offer you in the BBQ option.
We offer six Birthday party options
Option 1
The first option is a one-hour party (£15 per person) where you have a choice of one of the following types of archery:
- Traditional range target archery which involves target shooting on the range with exploding balloons
- Long-distance archery where you get to see your arrows arcing through the sky and landing on given targets
- TAG archery where you get to shoot each other with foam-padded arrows and have the opportunity to use colourful smoke grenades. This is available for 9-year-olds and over.
Option 2
The second option is the two-hour party (£24 per person) where you get to try out all three of the following types of archery:
- Traditional range target archery which involves target shooting on the range with exploding balloons
- Long-distance archery where you get to see your arrows arcing through the sky and landing on given targets
- TAG archery where you get to shoot each other with foam-padded arrows and have the opportunity to use colourful smoke grenades. This is available for 9-year-olds and over.
Option 3
Our third option is the one-hour soft archery range session party (£15 per person) for 7 to 9-year-olds shooting with safety arrows with recurve bows at targets and balloons!
Option 4
Our fourth option is the build your own smoke bomb party. It runs for one-and-a-half-hours, is £26 per person, and is suitable for 8-year-olds and over. Build your own smoke bomb, light the fuse, step back and watch the show. We’ll also do a bit of archery as well!
Option 5
Our third option is the one-hour party (£10 per person) for young children (aged four to nine). This is a bubble party where they get to make their own giant bubbles and experience the magic of standing inside a giant bubble. They will also get to dance with bubbles in our large marquee or, if the weather is good, they can chase bubbles amongst the hay bales in our field. While, naturally, children love the bubble making activities, we find the adults enjoy the experience just as much, and we encourage them to get involved if they would like to!
Option 6
Our fourth option is again for young children (aged four to nine). This is a two-hour session (£16 per person), which includes the bubble experience party but thrown into the mix, is some messy face or body glitter activity, which will certainly make for some sparkling memories.
Please book any of these options using our calendar appointment system.

FAQ
A compound bow is easier to use than the more traditional recurve or longbow. Compound bows use a levering system of pulleys and cables which, once drawn past a certain point, require almost no strength to hold fully drawn. These mechanics make the compound bow faster and more accurate than other types of bow. Modern compound bows are made from materials such as aluminium and carbon fibre.

No, we welcome everyone from complete beginners, who have never touched a bow, to professionals, who compete in tournaments.
Yes, there is a gravel road leading to the field where you can then park on the grass. See below for directions.
Please do not wear baggy outfits or clothes that are accessorised with loose items like chains, ribbons and pompoms, as these can get caught up in the string of the bow. Only closed shoes may be worn – no sandals, Crocs or flip flops.
Archery is a very safe, enjoyable sport, if conducted in the right environment with professional guidance. We have the necessary facilities, expertise and equipment for sessions that include all individuals above the age of nine. Range rules are in place for safety purposes.
TAG archery is a cross between paintball and archery and is great fun. All arrows are tipped with strong protective foam. Young children could wear long-sleeved shirts or jackets and long trousers for further protection. It’s also a good idea to wear closed shoes as a precaution against tripping or being stepped on. Face masks are provided and will be worn at all times.
Yes, we do! We offer tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and soft drinks.
On the food side, we offer a BBQ package for Birthday parties and Group bookings. You will need to book this in advance.
Yes, we are fully insured.
Your instructor, who is also first aid trained, is a certified Archery GB Instructor, so you will be in good hands.
If you are able to pull the bow string back and aim in a controlled manner then yes, you can certainly participate.
No, we provide everything required, including protective arm guards and finger tabs.
If you own archery equipment and can demonstrate that you are able to conduct yourself in a competent and safe manner, then you are welcome to use it.
The style of archery we offer is generally suitable for people aged nine years and above. We can adjust bow tension for children, but a degree of upper body strength is required to pull the string back far enough to shoot effectively. However, if your child struggles to pull the string back on the bow, we have some soft archery options, which can be used instead.
Yes, we offer bubble and glitter parties for children from 4 to 8 years of age. Please see our birthday packages for more details.
Yes, we offer one-to-one coaching sessions to help improve your technique and ability if you wish to hone your skills.
If you have an existing injury, we advise against practising archery, as some upper body strength and mobility is required to shoot in a safe and competent manner.
Yes, that does make a difference. We have left-handed bows for those who need them.
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is a government body sponsored by the Home Office. A DBS check is an official record stating a person’s criminal convictions (if there are any). Such checks help to ensure that employers are making the right decisions during the recruitment process.
An Enhanced DBS check – which your Squire Archery instructor will have – is the highest level of DBS check available.
Please don’t hesitate to make an enquiry using the form below and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
